‘No life left there’: The suburbs bearing the brunt of Israel’s strikes on Beirut

Israeli airstrikes continue to demolish homes, schools, and hospitals in the southern suburbs of Beirut, destroying once-thriving neighborhoods on October 20, 2024. These thickly populated regions, long connected with Hezbollah fortresses, have been the focal point of increased besieging efforts as the contention among Israel and Lebanon twistings.

The background noise of jets flying overhead and the roar of explosions has become all-too-common. Without electricity, food, or a sense of safety, those residents who haven’t already fled to safer areas are stuck. Local officials say that a lot of families have been buried under the rubble, and others are having a hard time getting medicine because hospitals are full of people who have died.

Destruction and Despair

Sabra and Bourj el-Barajneh, once bustling with life, are now ghost towns. “There’s no life left here,” says 43-year-old Jamil, a long-time resident, standing before what remains of his childhood home. “We have nowhere else to go. This was our life, and now it’s all gone.”

The infrastructure, already fragile from previous conflicts, is collapsing. Water lines have been harmed, passing on thousands without admittance to clean drinking water. The stench of smoke fills the air as the remains of homes and businesses line the streets.

Humanitarian Crisis Unfolding

Aid workers describe a mounting humanitarian crisis as displaced families seek refuge in overcrowded schools and mosques. Many areas are cut off from international aid due to ongoing bombardments and the destruction of roads.Women, children, and the elderly are among the most vulnerable, and their circumstances are desperate as a result of a lack of basic services and the ongoing threat of airstrikes.

According to the Lebanese Red Cross, emergency services are struggling to reach those trapped under debris or isolated in cut-off neighborhoods. “We are overwhelmed,” said a spokesperson. “We need more support, but the strikes make it nearly impossible to operate.”

Israel’s Justification and Lebanon’s Response

Israel has defended its actions, claiming that its airstrikes are targeted at Hezbollah infrastructure hidden within civilian areas. “Our priority is to dismantle the military capabilities of a group that threatens our existence,” an Israeli military official stated. “Any civilian casualties are deeply regrettable, but Hezbollah uses these neighborhoods as shields.”

Lebanese officials, however, have condemned the strikes as indiscriminate and excessive. “These are war crimes,” said President Michel Moawad. “The people of Beirut are not pawns in a geopolitical game. They are being slaughtered in their homes.

International pressure for a ceasefire is mounting, with humanitarian organizations warning of the toll on civilians. As the conflict rages on, Beirut’s suburbs remain the epicenter of devastation, bearing the full brunt of a war with no end in sight.

For the people who remain, survival is now a day-to-day struggle, with no relief in sight.
