Trump halts plan for 50% steel and aluminium tariffs on Canada

President Donald Trump reversed his earlier decision on March 12, 2025, to double the 25% to 50% tariff on steel and aluminum imports from Canada. The initial announcement had come in response to Ontario’s imposition of a 25% surcharge on electricity exports to the United States. However, Ontario Premier Doug Ford decided to end the electricity surcharge after consulting with the United States. According to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, the United States administration decided to keep the 25% tariffs in place.

The tariff escalation and subsequent reversal caused volatility in financial markets, with the S&P 500 index experiencing fluctuations. Canada’s incoming Prime Minister, Mark Carney, condemned the tariff threats and vowed a strategic response to protect Canadian interests. He emphasized Canada’s readiness to respond promptly to any U.S. tariffs, while expressing a desire to avoid escalating trade tensions.

This development is part of a broader context of trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada. In recent months, President Trump has proposed various tariffs on Canadian goods, citing concerns over trade deficits and border security. Notably, he suggested that Canada could avoid such tariffs by becoming the 51st U.S. state—a proposal firmly rejected by Canadian officials.

The recent tariff threats have prompted both nations to seek diplomatic solutions. Premier Ford and Secretary Lutnick have scheduled meetings in Washington, D.C., to discuss the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) ahead of an April 2 deadline, aiming to prevent a broader trade conflict that could impact consumers and businesses on both sides of the border.

As these discussions unfold, stakeholders in both countries are closely monitoring the situation, hoping for a resolution that ensures economic stability and preserves the longstanding trade relationship between the U.S. and Canada.
