Trump fires top US general CQ Brown in shake-up at Pentagon

In a significant overhaul of U.S. military leadership, President Donald Trump has dismissed Air Force General Charles “CQ” Brown Jr. from his position as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. This move is part of a broader effort to reshape the Pentagon’s hierarchy.

President Trump announced the decision on Friday night, expressing gratitude for General Brown’s four decades of service: “I want to thank General Charles ‘CQ’ Brown for his over 40 years of service to our country, including as our current Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.” The President also revealed his intention to nominate retired Air Force Lieutenant General Dan “Razin” Caine as Brown’s successor. Caine, a former F-16 pilot and CIA associate director for military affairs, will require Senate confirmation before officially assuming the role.

The decision was supported by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who has made it clear that he wants to get rid of what he calls “woke” policies in the military. Hegseth had previously questioned whether General Brown’s appointment was influenced by considerations of race, stating in his 2024 book, “Was it because of his skin color? Or his skill? We’ll never.

In addition to General Brown’s dismissal, the administration has announced the removal of Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Lisa Franchetti and Air Force Vice Chief of Staff General Jim Slife. Admiral Franchetti was notably the first woman to lead a … branch. These changes signal a significant shift in the Pentagon’s leadership structure.

Democratic lawmakers have criticized these actions, suggesting they politicize the military. Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island commented, “Firing uniformed leaders as … … erodes the trust and professionalism.

These developments indicate a decisive move by the Trump administration to align military leadership more closely with its policy objectives, emphasizing a focus on traditional military roles and a departure from diversity and inclusion initiatives.
