Anthony Zurcher: Passage of megabill is big win for Trump

The passing of a comprehensive legislative package known as the “megabill” has resulted in a major electoral success for the former president, highlighting his ongoing power over the Republican Party and U.S. policymaking.

After weeks of intense talks, the plan, which combines important issues including border security, tax reform, energy growth, and defense spending, passed both chambers of Congress. The bill’s vast political and economic reach was reflected in the final vote, which received nearly full Republican support and attracted a few centrist Democrats.

This moment is a confirmation of Trump’s leadership style and policy goal, as he has been presenting himself as the driving force behind the GOP’s legislative plan. Many of the main features of the megabill are directly derived from Trump’s earlier plans, which have been repackaged with a stronger push in a Congress controlled by Republicans.

“This is proof that America is back on track,” Trump said in a celebratory rally in Ohio. “We are restoring law and order, rebuilding our economy, and putting America first—just like we promised.”

Critics, however, warn that the bill’s sheer scale—spanning thousands of pages—means some controversial measures have slipped through with limited public scrutiny. Among them are deregulation clauses affecting environmental protections and aggressive cuts to federal agencies viewed as bloated by conservative lawmakers.

Still, politically, the passage of the megabill reinforces Trump’s status as the GOP’s undisputed standard-bearer. It also sets the tone for a policy-heavy campaign season ahead.

As the dust settles in Washington, one thing is clear: Trump has scored a legislative triumph that will shape his narrative—and possibly the country’s direction—for months, if not years, to come.
