‘No going into Nato by Ukraine,’ says Trump as Zelensky prepares for White House talks

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has reiterated his opposition to Ukraine joining NATO, declaring there would be “no going into NATO by Ukraine” as Kyiv’s President Volodymyr Zelensky prepares for crucial talks at the White House.

Trump, who has long been critical of NATO expansion and questioned America’s role in the alliance, made the comments amid growing international debate over Ukraine’s security future. The remarks come just days before Zelensky is due to meet with U.S. officials in Washington, a visit widely seen as pivotal to Kyiv’s efforts to secure stronger Western support against Russia’s invasion.

While current U.S. policy under President Joe Biden remains supportive of Ukraine’s eventual NATO membership, Trump’s remarks highlight the sharp political divide in Washington over how far to extend commitments to Kyiv. Analysts warn that Trump’s stance could influence the tone of discussions as Ukraine seeks fresh security guarantees and continued aid.

Zelensky, who is expected to press for more military and financial backing during his trip, has repeatedly argued that Ukraine’s path to NATO is central to its long-term survival. But Trump’s warning underscores the uncertainty surrounding U.S. policy should he return to office in 2025.

The White House has not directly responded to Trump’s comments, but officials signaled that talks with Zelensky would reaffirm U.S. support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and its fight against Russian aggression.
